CN Brown Company’s Employee Spotlight for November, Milton Porter!
Enjoy what Milton shared about his journey with CN Brown Company:
How did your career progress at CN Brown Company?
I started with CN Brown Company in 1988 as a heating oil driver in Skowhegan. I was from Augusta and did not know any of the streets. I was told “This would be a breeze.” Yeah right…If I was lucky there may be an index card with a few directions. The old manager / bookkeeper “Armond” would try to tell me where places were. He was French. LOL.
After Hour call outs were only $30. I would sometime have 2 or 3 a night. Occasionally, I would sometimes sleep in the back room at the Big Apple. Back then there was not any limit to the hours of service. It was not unusual for me to work 80 hours a week in the Winter. Now I work a set schedule, I have a GPS, and that gets me to where I need to go. The directions are on the tablets and I always know how much inventory I have on the truck.
What’s the best part of your current job?
The best part of my job now is that I have a great work / life balance. I rarely have to work weekends. This allows me to barrel race in the Summer time which I have enjoyed doing for 35 years. I also enjoy filling in for the Somerset Sheriff Department when I am available and needed. I volunteer for the Special Olympics with the Sheriff Department. I have done that for 20 years.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is getting used to new systems. The new systems usually do make my job a lot easier but not right off. LOL!
What’s your favorite memory from working at CN Brown Company?
One of my favorite memories working for CN Brown was when I helped one of our competitors get out of a ditch with the sand I had on my truck. The driver challenged me as he did not think that it would work. He was wrong. The owner found out and thanked me for helping his driver.
I have been greeting at the door by things I will never be able to “unsee” in my lifetime. LOL!
I have made some incredible friends with some of my customers and with the people that I work with.
Why would you recommend working for CN Brown Company?
I would recommend working for CN Brown to anyone that enjoys working with the public, enjoys a challenge, and want a long term position with a great company.
At the end of each day I feel great when I leave ’cause I feel that I made a difference!
We thank you, Milt, for your 32 years of service to our company. We appreciate YOU!
